#MusicReview: ‘Jehovah Overdo’ by Chidinma Ekile
Chidinma’s palpable passion always shines through in her vocals, and she belts beautifully, switching to mixed voice in the same breath at ‘Hallowed be your name’. The back ups have a raspy effect, which sort of reminds me of Mercy Chinwo actually, especially when there is a match pitch at ‘Oya take my heart, I give it to you, it belongs to you…’
#Throwback: ‘We’re Blessed’ by Fred Hammond
This live jam on E flat with 90s rnb is so popping. Fred Hammond rap sings like the pro that he is. There are so many notes where he growls, adding pizzaz to the piece. #AlbumReview: ‘The Cross My Gaze’ by Mercy Chinwo|| Streams of Mercy on the Highlife Beat
Mercy starts raspy against the piano playing softly on this Ballad fit for a musical. She then becomes soft, along with the backups and slightly soft digital trumpet. Her voice becomes slightly animated as the digital instrumentation does a pizzicato number. It’s almost like a whole orchestra comes in at ‘Oh, what a father I have in you’, immediately giving me the imagery of the whole of Heaven’s Armies coming to your rescue when you choose God over anyone else. I love how she spontaneously recites God’s lovely names in Igbo, as the proud badges He owns, especially ‘Onyekwaranta’ and ‘Ekueme’. This is the most classical piece on this album, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the juxtaposition of igbo and classical music.
